Presentation - Regional Skills Forum Midlands

AIT has three strategic research institutes in Materials research (MRI), Bioscience research (BRI) and Software research (SRI), along with two Enterprise Ireland funded Technology Gateways – Applied Polymer Technologies (APT) and Connected Media Application Design and Delivery (COMAND) - driving market-informed research in collaboration with industry partners.

A strong research infrastructure and tradition of focused inquiry has earned AIT awarding authority to doctoral level across these areas. Further research clusters exist at faculty level.

AIT’s strategy is to be partner of choice for enterprise, focusing our applied research, innovation and enterprise support activities on addressing the needs of regional and national industry by proactively collaborating with start-ups and established companies and by providing a comprehensive range of knowledge intensive services, with a focus on SMEs.

The purpose-built Research HUB located on East Campus is home to research graduates both MSc and PhD.

The Midlands Innovation and Research Centre (MIRC) operates as a converging hub for innovation, research and enterprise. It provides incubation facilities for innovative and knowledge -based enterprise, delivers the Enterprise Ireland New Frontiers entrepreneur development programme in partnership with Maynooth University, is a location of ESA Space Solutions Centre Ireland, and makes available the resources and expertise of AIT to support client companies and enterprise in the region.

AIT has been building its research, innovation and enterprise capacity over recent decades and has in place the conduits to transfer knowledge and technologies in a manner that supports entrepreneurs, innovators, SMEs and industry partners.

HR Excellence in Research @ AIT

In July 2015, the EU Commission awarded Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) the prestigious award of “HR Excellence in Research”.

The award recognises AIT’s commitment to providing a stimulating and favourable working environment for researchers. It reflects the Institute’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

Over 1,200 institutions from 40 different countries have expressed their explicit support for the Charter and Code, with 233 having obtained the Commission’s “HR Excellence in Research” badge.

AIT is the second institute of technology in Ireland to achieve the award, and joins WIT, NUI Galway, UCC, DCU, RCSI, UCD and UL as award holders.

The Charter and Code include 40 principles and requirements which specify the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers, as well as that of employers and/or funders of research. To achieve the Code, AIT underwent an audit of its policies and procedures.
